This week, JAM TALK breaks down an assumption of that was brought to my attention that I may be a racist or that I may have an issue with white folks. It was such an asinine assumption about me that I thought it was hilarious because it couldn't be further from the truth. LOL, plus my Stagecoach street cred has to count for something, right? LOL.


We take a music break to "BLACK" BY FIFTY50 (made up of Queen Kandi Cole & Miki Vale), the song always gives me chills. Check out the music video.

The band, Mortasay [VONYSE REEDER and & AMY LOU PALMER] join via Zoom to talk having discussions as an interracial couple on social injustices/Black Lives Matter, White Fragility, coming out, balance of touring on the road together, and performing with Chaka Kahn.

ABOUT:

MORTASAY is the expression of an American musical duo, composed of married musicians Vonyse Reeder and Amy Lou Palmer. Formed in 2010 in Los Angeles, California, MORTASAY reflects an eclectic indie electronic soul sound. Or as Vonyse likes to call it Alter’d Native Soul. Their lyrics and sound reveal a merger of two unconventional childhoods. Vonyse, an Indianapolis, Indiana native, and Amy Lou, a native of Eastern Washington State, consider themselves city-bound country girls. The music discloses many musical influences from country to soul, steeped in activism, spirituality, and consciousness. Growing up in different parts of America, both void of diversity, music has shaped how they perceive society and connected as a married couple.


#Mortasay’s combined experiences:

  • Toured with Cake, Gomez, Rootbeer

  • Played shows with Chaka Kahn, Black Eyed Peas, Ozomatli, Hillsong, Indie Arie, Erykah Badu, Morris Day and the Times

  • Performances at Milwaukee Summerfest, House of Blues, LA Pride, San Diego Pride, Las Vegas Pride, Troubadour, SXSW, DTLA Proud and numerous colleges.

  • You can hear some of Amy’s percussion skills in the track “Party Like a Rockstar.” by Shane Hendrix featuring Nicki Minaj.

JAM IN THOT:

I'm so geeked to be back to have these critical conversations that need to be had and the stories that need to be told. I'm over the moon excited for Part 2 (TBD) because I would really like to talk about everything we put a "pin in," especially religion and spirituality in the LGBTQ+ community. I have my own personal stories including some that still impact myself as well as my family to this day. I'll try to save that story for when they come back on.
